Glycerin. Also known as glycerol, it is a colorless, odorless, viscous, sweet-tasting, non-toxic organic compound. Included in the composition of all lipids. Its use is very wide:

In the food industry used as a humectant, solvent, sweetener in food products. It is also used as a filler in the preparation of low-fat foods (biscuits, etc.) and as a thickener in liqueurs. As a food additive, it is marked with the E number – E422.

Medicine, pharmaceuticals and personal care. Used as an emollient, lubricant and moisturizer. It is used during allergen immunotherapy, it is included in the composition of various preparations – cough syrups and expectorants, toothpastes, mouthwashes, skin care products, shaving creams, hair care products, soaps, various ointments, hair gels. It is used as a preparation that gives and maintains the shape of the tablet. The main ingredient used to make soap for sensitive skin.

Plant extracts. When making tinctures by the extraction method, a 10% glycerol solution prevents the precipitation of tannin in ethanol extracts from plants. Used in the preparation of herbal extracts as a non-alcoholic solvent alternative to ethanol. Alcohol-based extracts may have the alcohol removed and replaced with glycerol to maintain their properties for longer.

Electronic cigarette liquid. Glycerol, along with propylene glycol, are widely used components in the production of e-cigarette liquids. Glycerin and its mixtures with propylene glycol as the main base, where it is easy to add aromas, nicotine additive, etc. In other words, it is e-cigarette liquid. In principle, an electronic cigarette is like a regular inhaler, because the glycerin or its mixture inside is vaporized by a heating element. We can accept various mixtures with glycerol or otherwise glycerin. Starting with pure glycerin to 50/50 with propylene glycol. Various mixtures are prepared to obtain the necessary viscosity for e-cigarettes. Depending on the type of heating element (coil or plate) a different fluid viscosity is required. If the heating element is a plate, then a thick base (pure glycerine) can be used, if the heating element is a spiral, then a more fluid liquid is needed to flow and be vaporized, so glycerine/propylene glycol mixtures or pure propylene glycol are used. Like ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, glycerol is a nonionic kosmotrope that forms strong hydrogen bonds with water molecules. These bonds are stronger than hydrogen bonds between water molecules. It is this property that prevents the formation of ice. If water contains 70% glycerol, the freezing point of the liquid is -38 °C. In the laboratory, glycerol is a common solvent component for enzymatic reagents that are stored below 0 °C because it lowers the freezing point. Also used as a protective agent against ice crystals for organisms (bacteria, nematodes, mammalian embryos) that are placed in frozen solutions.

As a raw material for the production of other chemicals. Glycerol is used to make nitroglycerin, which in turn is used to make various explosives such as dynamite. Nitroglycerin is often used to reduce the symptoms of angina
